Fast Fashion vs. Made-to-Order: Why Choosing Slow Fashion Matters for Our Oceans

Fast Fashion vs. Made-to-Order

In a world where new styles hit shelves every week, the fashion industry's impact on the environment is impossible to ignore. Fast fashion relies on mass production and overconsumption, leading to overflowing landfills, polluted waterways, and ultimately, more plastic in our oceans. This article will explore Fast Fashion vs. Made-to-Order environmental impacts.

At The Dive Compass, we believe there's a better way, through a made-to-order model that focuses on slow fashion, sustainability, and protecting the seas we love.

We'll dive into the differences between fast fashion and made-to-order, why we've chosen a slower, more mindful approach, and how it helps protect our oceans.

What is Fast Fashion and Why is it a Problem?

Fast fashion is all about speed and low costs — pumping out runway-inspired trends at a rapid pace to encourage constant buying. Unfortunately, this business model comes at a high cost for the planet. Here's why:

Fast fashion textile waste pile

  • Overproduction: Fast fashion brands often produce millions of items at once, leading to unsold inventory that ends up in landfills.
  • Harmful Materials: Most fast fashion garments are made from virgin polyester, which sheds microplastics into the ocean every time they're washed. Additionally, the use of harsh chemicals and dyes is prevalent in fast fashion.
  • Environmental Impact: The fast fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions — more than international flights and maritime shipping combined.

The result? Mountains of textile waste and plastic that eventually make their way into our oceans, harming marine life and disrupting delicate ecosystems.

The Dive Compass Approach: Made-to-Order Slow Fashion

At The Dive Compass, we're committed to slow fashion — a movement focused on quality over quantity and a more mindful approach to production. That's why every piece of our swimwear is made on demand, crafted only once an order is placed.

Swimwear made with recycled plastic

This model helps us:

  • Reduce Waste: By making only what you need, we eliminate the risk of unsold inventory ending up in landfills.
  • Support a Circular Economy: Our swimwear is made from recycled polyester, turning plastic waste into something beautiful and functional — and giving incentive to recycle that waste instead of discarding it.
  • Conserve Resources: Made-to-order production uses less water and energy compared to mass production.

This approach aligns with our mission to connect you closer to the sea while helping to protect it. 10% of every sale is donated to ocean conservation organisations including Sea Shepherd, Ocean Conservancy, and Livingseas Foundation — because small actions can make big waves.

How Made-to-Order Swimwear Helps Protect the Ocean

Coral reef ocean conservation

1. Minimizes Overproduction: By making each item only after it's ordered, we prevent the wasteful overproduction that defines fast fashion. This means fewer textiles in landfills and less waste making its way to our oceans.

2. Uses Recycled Materials: Our swimwear — including Scuba Bikinis, String Bikinis, Cropped Rashies, Swim Trunks, and Swim Shorts — is crafted from recycled polyester, turning plastic waste into high-performance fabrics. This helps divert plastic from the waste stream while reducing the need for virgin polyester derived from fossil fuels.

3. Encourages Mindful Consumption: When you choose made-to-order, you're choosing to invest in quality over quantity. Our goal is to inspire you to buy what you love and what lasts — because a sustainable wardrobe starts with mindful purchasing.

Why We Chose Slow Fashion for The Dive Compass

Snorkeling with sustainable swimwear

The Dive Compass was founded to make a difference — both above and below the surface. As a scuba diver who has seen firsthand the impact of plastic pollution on coral reefs and marine life, I wanted to create a brand that did more than just sell swimwear. I wanted to create a brand that could inspire a deeper connection to the ocean while actively protecting it.

Choosing a made-to-order model was a natural fit. It allows us to:

  • Focus on sustainability by reducing waste and using recycled materials.
  • Celebrate the ocean's beauty through ocean-inspired prints drawn from the marine life and reef ecosystems our community dives and protects.
  • Give back by donating a portion of every sale to organisations working to protect our seas.

At The Dive Compass, we believe in making swimwear that's not only beautiful but also has a purpose — helping to conserve the ocean we love.

Fast Fashion vs. Made-to-Order: Key Differences

Fast FashionMade-to-OrderMass production with excess waste.Crafted only when ordered to reduce waste.Uses virgin polyester from fossil fuels.Made with recycled polyester from plastic waste.Low-cost, short lifespan.Designed for quality, durability, and adventure.High carbon emissions and water usage.Minimizes energy and water use with sustainable practices.

Choosing made-to-order isn't just a trend — it's a movement towards a more sustainable future. Every time you choose slow fashion, you're casting a vote for a cleaner ocean and a healthier planet.

The Impact So Far

Since launching in June 2024, we've been able to:

  • Prevent plastic waste from reaching the ocean by using recycled polyester.
  • Eliminate unsold inventory waste through made-to-order production.
  • Donate 10% of every sale to protect coral reefs and marine life.

These actions are just the beginning. As we grow, so will our impact — because we believe that every purchase has the power to protect the ocean.

How You Can Make a Difference

Making a positive impact on the ocean is easier than you think. Here's how you can help:

  1. Choose made-to-order: Opt for brands that produce sustainably and avoid overproduction.
  2. Invest in quality: Buy less, but buy better — pieces that will last for many seasons.
  3. Support ocean conservation: A portion of every purchase from The Dive Compass goes directly to protecting our seas.

Join the Slow Fashion Movement

When you choose made-to-order, you're choosing a better future for our oceans. You're saying no to waste, no to overproduction, and yes to swimwear that's as mindful as it is beautiful.

Ready to make a difference? Explore our made-to-order swimwear collection and dive into sustainable fashion that protects the seas we love.

Thank you for supporting slow fashion and helping to protect our oceans!

Did you know that it is estimated that over 50% of coral reefs have been lost since the 1950s?

When we learned this heartbreaking statistic we knew we had to do something about it - so we created The Dive Compass, an ocean loving swimwear brand where YOUR purchase can actually make a difference. Each purchase plants corals in the heart of the Coral Triangle in Bali, Indonesia with the Livingseas Foundation.
