Chasing the Leopard Sharks! Julian Rocks, Byron Bay, Australia
Byron Bay is famous for its laid-back, hippie campervan lifestyle. But did you know it's also home to one of Australia's most incredible dive sites? At Julian Rocks, you can encounter leopard sharks, manta rays, gray nurse sharks, and an abundance of marine life, making it a must-visit destination for scuba divers.
Julian Rocks: A Hidden Gem Beneath the Waves

Julian Rocks, officially called Nguthungulli Julian Rocks Nature Reserve, is located just 2.5 km off the coast of Byron Bay. This marine sanctuary consists of two rocky pinnacles that rise above the ocean surface, uninhabited except for seabirds. Below the waves, however, lies a breathtaking underwater ecosystem — one of Australia's best-kept secrets for shark diving and marine biodiversity.
The magic of Julian Rocks comes from the convergence of warm tropical waters and cooler temperate currents, creating a unique marine environment that supports over 1,000 recorded marine species. Whether you're diving in crystal-clear visibility or navigating a stronger current, this dive site offers a thrilling experience for divers of all levels.
Leopard Shark Season at Julian Rocks
One of the highlights of diving at Julian Rocks is the chance to see Indo-Pacific leopard sharks (sometimes called zebra sharks in the USA). These graceful, spotted sharks are completely harmless and gather in large numbers here during their peak season, from December to May — the Australian summer.
Julian Rocks is home to the largest recorded aggregation of leopard sharks in Australia, and as of 2023, the Cape Byron Leopard Shark Project has identified over 420 individual leopard sharks in the area. If you've ever dreamed of swimming alongside these elegant creatures, this is the place to do it.
On our dive, we were lucky enough to encounter a dozen leopard sharks, along with a surprise visit from a manta ray at the end of our dive. We also spotted a couple of wobbegongs — Australia's famous camouflaged carpet sharks — resting on the reef.
Dive Shop Recommendations
We highly recommend Sun Dive for diving at Julian Rocks. As the first and only locally owned dive shop in Byron Bay (established in 1988), Sun Dive has a deep connection with the local marine environment and conservation efforts.
Booking in advance is essential, especially during peak season. You can make reservations through their website: Sun Dive Byron Bay
👉 Tip: Dive trips here depend on ocean conditions, so if you're planning a trip, consider staying in Byron Bay for a few extra days in case your dive gets postponed.
🌊 Not a certified diver? No worries — Julian Rocks is also a fantastic spot for snorkeling and freediving, so you can still experience the magic of this marine paradise.
Dive Conditions
We visited Julian Rocks in early March, when summer was coming to an end. Here's what you can expect:
- Visibility: 10–15 meters
- Water temperature: ~24°C (a bit chilly for warm-water divers!)
- Current: Can vary from mild to strong, depending on the day
